01 · Quick answer

The easiest ways to get to Pier 33

For most visitors, the F line streetcar or a rideshare is simplest. There is no parking at Pier 33, so the operator and the National Park Service both recommend public transport or a drop-off.

01 Best overall

Muni F Market & Wharves streetcar

The F line runs along Market Street, turns north on The Embarcadero, and passes right by the ferry terminal on its way to Fisherman’s Wharf. It is the most direct transit option from downtown.

  • Stops by Pier 33
  • Good from Market Street
  • No car needed
At the stop Get off at The Embarcadero & Bay Street, then walk the short distance to Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing.
02 Operator recommended

Taxi or rideshare

The ferry operator specifically recommends rideshare because parking nearby is limited and expensive. It is also the easiest choice for early departures or if you are coming from across the city.

  • Direct drop-off
  • No parking needed
  • No transfers
In the app Enter “Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing” as the destination, not just “Fisherman’s Wharf”.
03 Good nearby

Walking from Fisherman’s Wharf

Pier 33 sits roughly a quarter mile southeast of Fisherman’s Wharf. The waterfront promenade is flat, so this is an easy walk if you are already in the area.

  • Flat route
  • About 1/4 mile
  • Passes Pier 39
Direction check Walk southeast along The Embarcadero, past Pier 39, until you reach Pier 33.
04 Useful from elsewhere in SF

Muni bus: 8, 8BX, or 39

The operator lists the 8 Bayshore, 8BX Bayshore Express, and 39 Coit as stopping within walking distance of Pier 33. Use them when your starting point is not on the F line.

  • Short final walk
  • Check live service
  • Route depends on origin
At the last stop Head toward The Embarcadero and look for the large Alcatraz Landing sign.
05 Rail link

BART or Muni Metro to Embarcadero station

Embarcadero is the closest BART station to Pier 33. From there, either board the F line north or walk the waterfront, which takes roughly 20 minutes on foot.

  • Direct from SFO
  • Transfer to F line
  • Or walk the bay
At the station Exit to The Embarcadero and head north toward Fisherman’s Wharf.
06 Best for groups

Pre-booked coach or group transfer

Useful for school, cruise, or tour groups with a set meeting point. Check the voucher carefully, because combo and third-party products can have their own instructions.

  • Meeting-point based
  • Follow voucher text
  • Often timed
At the meeting point Use the group instructions on your voucher, not the general pier map.
07 Heads-up

Cable car plus a walk

Neither cable car line stops at Pier 33. The Powell-Mason line ends at Bay and Taylor Streets, about six blocks west, and the Powell-Hyde line ends further away at Aquatic Park.

  • Scenic, not direct
  • Six-block walk
  • Allow extra time
From the turnaround Walk east toward The Embarcadero, or transfer to the F line.
02 · Entrance first

Go to Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, not Pier 39

All official Alcatraz ferries leave from Pier 33 on The Embarcadero near Bay Street. Pier 39 is a separate attraction, and the bay cruises that leave from there do not land on the island.

Individual visitors

Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing

Look for the large “Alcatraz Landing” sign at the pier entrance. You need a ticket to enter the queue, either as a QR code on your phone or a printed ticket.

  • All adults need a valid photo ID.
  • Everyone in your group must be present to join the queue.
  • Do not queue at Pier 39.
Combo and third-party tickets

Some bundles include a second location

Some packages pair Alcatraz with a separate bay cruise that leaves from Pier 39. The Alcatraz ferry itself still leaves from Pier 33, so read which part of your voucher is which.

  • Keep the voucher open offline.
  • Check which pier each part of the booking uses.
  • Only Alcatraz City Cruises sells genuine Alcatraz tickets; avoid street sellers.
!
Late arrivals cannot switch to a later ferry.

Ferries leave on a strict schedule. If you reach the wrong pier first, you lose the time you need for check-in and security screening.

03 · Streetcar

Use the F line for the clearest public transport approach

The historic F Market & Wharves streetcar runs along Market Street and The Embarcadero, passing right by Pier 33. Streetcars are sometimes replaced by buses during events, so check service before you travel.

F Market & Wharves

Best from downtown and Market Street

Use this if you are starting near Market Street or the Ferry Building. From Embarcadero station, it is a short ride north along the waterfront.

  1. Board the F line heading toward Fisherman’s Wharf.
  2. Get off at The Embarcadero & Bay Street stop.
  3. Walk to the Alcatraz Landing sign at Pier 33.
  4. If you reach Pier 39, you have gone too far.
Service check

Check live service on the day

Muni sometimes swaps F line streetcars for buses during parades, events, and track work. Confirm the route before you leave, especially on weekends and holidays.

  1. Open the SFMTA trip planner or Muni Mobile.
  2. Check service alerts for the F line.
  3. Pay by Clipper, Muni Mobile, or contactless card.
  4. Leave time for the final walk to the pier.

Plan your trip with the SFMTA trip planner and check service alerts before you travel.

04 · Bus

Buses work, but the last walk still decides the route

Alcatraz City Cruises lists the 8 Bayshore, 8BX Bayshore Express, and 39 Coit as stopping within walking distance of Pier 33. Your best line depends on where you start.

8 / 8BX Bayshore

From Chinatown and downtown

These lines reach the North Beach and waterfront edge near Kearny Street and North Point, a short walk from Pier 33.

39 Coit

From Coit Tower and North Beach

A small local route that connects Telegraph Hill with the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Handy if you are staying nearby.

Live service

Check traffic and detours before you leave

Buses face more traffic delays than the F line. Confirm the current route and stop, then leave extra time for the pier walk.

05 · From popular areas

Route patterns from the places visitors usually start

These are route-planning patterns, not minute-by-minute promises. Use the live planner on the day, then finish at the Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing sign.

06 · Airport

From SFO, leave your luggage first

There is no luggage storage at Pier 33, and luggage is not allowed on the ferry or the island. Drop your bags at your hotel before heading to the waterfront.

Public transport

BART to Embarcadero, then the F line

BART runs from SFO to Embarcadero station in central San Francisco. From there, take the F line north along the waterfront or walk.

  1. Take BART from the SFO station toward downtown San Francisco.
  2. Get off at Embarcadero station and exit to The Embarcadero.
  3. Board the F line toward Fisherman’s Wharf, or walk about 20 minutes north.
  4. Get off at The Embarcadero & Bay Street and walk to Pier 33.
Taxi or rideshare

Ask for Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing

The simplest door-to-door choice, but traffic into the city can be heavy at peak times. Only use it for a same-day ferry if you have already dropped your bags.

  1. Set the destination as Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing.
  2. Leave generous room for traffic.
  3. Walk to the ticketed queue line when you arrive.
!
Do not book the ferry against your landing time.

Flights run late, and baggage, transit, and a hotel stop all take time. Visitors who arrive with luggage cannot board and there are no lockers at the pier.

07 · Train

If you arrive by train, connect into the Muni network and follow the waterfront

01 · Caltrain 4th & King station

Caltrain ends at 4th & King in SoMa. Take the N Judah Muni Metro to Embarcadero station, then transfer to the F line.

02 · Amtrak No Amtrak station in San Francisco

Amtrak trains stop at Emeryville. Connecting Amtrak Thruway buses cross the Bay Bridge into downtown San Francisco.

03 · Finish Finish at the pier

From downtown, take the F line to The Embarcadero & Bay Street and walk to Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing.

08 · Walking

Walking works best when you already stay near the waterfront

The Embarcadero promenade is flat and wheelchair accessible, with bay views most of the way. The walk gets slower once you start inland and cross busy streets.

Waterfront walk

From the Ferry Building or Embarcadero station

Head north along the bay side of The Embarcadero. Expect around 20 minutes at an easy pace.

  • Keep the bay on your right.
  • Count the pier numbers upward toward 33.
  • Stop at the Alcatraz Landing sign.
From the Wharf side

From Fisherman’s Wharf or the cable car turnaround

Walk southeast along The Embarcadero. You will pass Pier 39 first; keep going to Pier 33.

  • Powell-Mason turnaround is about six blocks away.
  • Pier numbers count down as you approach.
  • Pier 39 is not the boarding point.
09 · Taxi, car & parking

Use a car for the drop-off, not for parking

There is no parking at Pier 33. There are about 15 commercial lots within five blocks, with more than 3,000 spaces in total, but prices vary widely.

Taxi / rideshare

Ask for Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing

The drop-off is on The Embarcadero near Bay Street. A generic “Fisherman’s Wharf” request can leave you a long walk away.

Driving

Choose a garage before you leave

Alcatraz City Cruises has no parking of its own or any link to local garages. A visit takes at least 2.5 to 3 hours, so street meters are usually too short.

Accessibility

Accessible drop-off zone

The National Park Service notes an accessibility drop-off zone at the Pier 33 entrance for visitors with special needs arriving by car.

10 · Accessibility

The pier and ferries are accessible; the island climb is the challenge

Pier 33 and the ferries are wheelchair accessible. The hard part is on the island itself, where the road to the Cellhouse is steep.

Pier 33 and the ferries

Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing is fully accessible, as are the ferries and the dock area on the island. Accessible restrooms are available at the pier.

The climb to the Cellhouse

It is about a quarter mile from the dock to the Cellhouse, with a 130-foot rise in elevation, roughly equal to climbing 13 floors.

The S.E.A.T. shuttle

An accessible electric shuttle runs about twice an hour between the dock and the Cellhouse for visitors who cannot manage the climb. Seats are first come, first served.

Shuttle limits

One companion can ride along if space allows. Strollers cannot be taken on the shuttle.

11 · Security & bags

Travel light and keep your ticket easy to show

Pier 33 has airport-style screening with bag checks. Only small bags are allowed, and there are no lockers or luggage storage at the pier.

Bags

Small backpacks only

Backpacks up to 16 x 20 inches are generally allowed. Luggage, coolers, oversized backpacks, and large packages are not allowed on the ferry or the island.

Food and drink

No food at Pier 33

Food is not allowed on the Pier 33 landing. Food and drinks are sold onboard, and on the island you may eat only in the dock area. Bottled water is fine everywhere.

Security

Expect screening before boarding

Bags can be searched at any time. Weapons, bikes, skateboards, and drones are prohibited, and alcohol is not allowed on the island.

i
Bring photo ID and keep your ticket offline.

All adults need a valid photo ID. Save the QR code and the pier details on your phone before you leave, in case your signal drops at the waterfront.

12 · Timing

Work backwards from the time on your ticket

Your departure time is the deadline. Before it, you need to reach the pier, clear security, and join the boarding line.

Standard ticket

Be at Pier 33 at least 30 minutes early

The operator asks visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure for check-in, security, and boarding. Ferries leave on time and do not wait.

  • Check the departure time on the ticket.
  • Add travel time plus the final walk.
  • Late arrivals cannot move to a later ferry.
Guided or group booking

The meeting time is the real deadline

If your voucher gives an earlier meeting time or a different meeting point, treat that as your arrival time.

  • Use the voucher meeting point.
  • Keep the operator message open.
  • Under-18s must be with an adult aged 21 or older.
13 · Find the right pier

Use these street and pier clues to reach Alcatraz Landing

Do not navigate by a generic “Fisherman’s Wharf” pin. Use the street and pier names instead: reach The Embarcadero, approach Bay Street, then look for Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing.

The final approach in four checks

These are not four separate destinations. They are confirmation points as you move toward the ferry entrance.

14 · Final checklist

Check the pier, the time, and the last walk before you leave

A good route only helps if it ends at the right pier at the right time. Save the pier details, your ticket, and your transport plan before you head out.

Confirm the date and departure time

Use the latest ticket or operator email, not an old screenshot or calendar note.

Save the exact address

Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, The Embarcadero near Bay Street, San Francisco, CA 94133.

Bring photo ID

Every adult in your group needs valid photo identification.

Leave luggage behind

No luggage is allowed on the ferry and there is no storage at the pier.

Check live transport

F line streetcars are sometimes replaced by buses during events and works.

Dress in layers

The island is often windy and cold, even when the city feels warm. Wear shoes with good grip.

Ready to go

The simplest plan gets you to Pier 33 early, with your ticket and ID ready

01 Set the correct destination

02 Choose the clearest transport

For most visitors, the F line or a rideshare is the easiest way to reach the boarding point.

03 Arrive before your deadline

Be at the pier at least 30 minutes before departure. Late arrivals cannot move to a later ferry.
